Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend
Reviewed 2006-08-21
Funky blues tinged alt-rock, for fans of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Glass Candy, John Spencer Blues Explosion, Von Iva. This is basically a guitar/drums duo that sounds like art school hipsters channeling their inner swamp redneck fronted by a woman with a set of pipes to bring down the house, the house being a packed Baptist church on a Sunday morning in the deep south. Complete with liner note vanity shots displaying requisite bored junkie chic and gender-bending this record smacks of a cheap attempt at being more “accessable” than their first releases (ca. 2003) which were truly remarkable. The producer/engineer failed miserably capturing her voice to tape (I highly recommend seeing this woman sing live). Definitely gots the funk on this one though, like they’ve been sharing needles with Glass Candy or Von Iva. Great stuff, even if overproduction has dulled it bit (you’ll be seeing this band opening for the Yeahsx3 at Coachella in no time). Obvious they moved to Olympia.

1) funky soul, dirty bass notes slow sparse motif
with high hat beat
2) bash beat, title track, slick vocal overdubs
3) cool dancey beat, good use of space, undeniable hip shaking rhythmic fuck music
4) oh dear lord, a shity sensitive ballad that is laughable, almost throw-this-cd-away worthy
5) dissonant guitar a la Sonic Youth, swings and sways
6) epic funky soulful simple feel, unbelievable what a shitty job the producer did translating her wails on this track to tape, leads seamlessly with next track, can be played together
7) (can be played nicely with previous track) dark low soulful, explodes and has some awesome percussion/cowbell
8) dark tom tom beat
9) funky, but maybe this one is better live
10) this woman sings so beautifully (and the production on this smacks her down so hard): a near a capela to start, with dark bassline, then piano, cool as fuck
