Straight jazz with a trio of veterans: Jack DeJohnette (drums), John Scofield (guitar), and Larry Goldings (organ/electric piano). Mostly upbeat, rollicking stuff with heavy blues and fusion influences, meant to be a tribute to drummer Tony Williams. Schofield gets all guitar-hero in places, which can seem a bit trite but creates some exciting moments (1.4,1.6). A good time, with a bit of that muted ECM polish even though it's a live session. DeJohnette tosses in some epic, arresting drum solos. DISK ONE 1- Upbeat, bright Joe Henderson composition. A rocking blues feel. 2- Slow. Starts with solo organ, adds muscle later; SEGUE into: 3- One-minute rocking prelude, SEGUES into: 4- Pulse-driven jam, twinges of middle-East/African influence. 5- Coolly spacious; slow feel. Nice. A Tony Williams composition. 6- Gets into some crazy guitar in a strong, fast setting. Last 9 minutes dominated by drums, first subtle, then thunderous DISK TWO 1- Mid/fast: Burbling, cooking beat. 2- Slow, swirling, opening with a thoughtful electric-piano solo. Some louder, blues-inflected guitar later. SEGUES into: 3- Energetic floaty jam with guitar lead 4- A Coltrane-penned obscurity: bright, swingy, upbeat. Gritty guitar/drums duet about halfway through, and a drum solo. Spoken intro. 5- Tony Williams' signature song. Big and electric, fusion-minded. Grand intro, crazy guitar and organ solos. | ||
