Ahmed Abdul-Malik - Jazz Sounds of Africa

Reissue of two African influenced bop albums from Monk's longtime bassist Malik. There are influences from two distinct African musical traditions: North African, with the exotic sounding oud and Central African highlife featuring blaring horns and lots of percussion. The song structure is Western with standard heads & solos, but the instrumentation gives this a unique sound. Great stuff!

1. Fast bop beat w/ wandering ethnic solos
2. Straight bop with a classical influence
*3. Quiet shuffle with bluesy oud
**4. Great fast world beat w/ oud
*5. Cello-led ballad
*6. Cacophonous highlife march
7. Joyful percussion-heavy bounce
**8. Funky groove
*9. Ethnic oud melody with driving hand drum beat
10. Straight med-tempo bop
*11. Highlife percussion w/ jazzy solos
*12. Driving Arabic wail
