Great funky soul cuts from Phoenix (who knew?) A real treasure trove of honest street-level Soul – listening to this really lifted my spirits. I could have put another three stars in front of everything.
No FCCs, and no bad tracks (apart from Cecil, which is STRICTLY novelty!) Hooray for Hadley Murrell, whoever the hell he was!
1. 2:40 ***Funky To The Bone, Freddi & Henchi & Soulsetters, 1972
electric guitar, funky beat, hot hot hot!
2. 2:29 **Soul Side Of The Street, Roy & The Dew Drops, 1968
syncopated funk with clear gospel influence
3. 1:56 *Turn Here, Eddie & Ernie, 1965
a bit rough production, horns-based soul, fine singing
4. 2:33 **Are You Angry, The Servicemen, 1967
uptempo Motown-ish, lots of harmonies, bells
5. 2:23 **I'll Stop Loving You, The Servicemen, 1967
totally Temptations, serious singing, harmonies
6. 2:06 ***Garbage In The Kitchen Pt. 1, The LBJ's, 1967
uptempo guitar and bass funk instrumental, rough and rowdy
7. 2:37 ***I'm Just A Nobody, Freddy Love, 1967
brown-eyed soul waltz. Whooooo hoo!
8. 2:42 **Funky Freeze, Bobby Soul, 1966
uptempo with goofy backing vocals
9. 2:15 **I'm Gonna Hurt You, Roy & The Dew Drops, 1967
producer talking intro, great Motown beat
10. 2:34 ***Wish You'd Come Home, Dumas King, 1964
slow soul wailing ballad, bluesy as hell (shit, anyone named “Dumas”, you just KNOW….)
11. 3:14 **Soul Train, The Soulsetters, 1965
really uptempo cover, shouting and clapping, whee! Stops for a bit of M-I-C-K-E-Y… wacky!
12. 2:14 **The No No, Those Fabulous Jokers, 1964
uptempo list of unknown dances – Land of 1000 other dances
13. 2:49 **Self Service, The New Bloods, 1964
sweet soul ballad
14. 2:53 ***Monkey See, Desert Souls, 1964
instrumental, keyboard and hot horns, sounds like it was recorded in the boy’s room
15. 4:01 *Cecil, The Unwanted French Fry, The Soulsetters, 1965
extremely goofy talking blues. There’s even a moral! Absolutely awful, but then it’s supposed to be…
