"Traditional" free jazz, energetic new versions of songs by '60s greats Sonny Rollins and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Think of it like upbeat straight jazz with the energy amped and the solos bleeding outside the lines a little more. Great stuff with a friendly vibe; part of saxophonist Ken Vandermark's efforts to rearrange some of his favorite composers' songs. (See liner notes.)

These recordings have the "classic" V5 formation, before Fred Lonberg-Holm joined: Jeb Bishop (trombone), Kent Kessler (bass), Tim Daisy (drums), Dave Rempis (alto/tenor sax), Ken Vandermark (sax/clarinet).

DISK ONE
1- Fast and bouncy; cool decelerating theme
2- Mid/fast, w/great drum and bass solos early on.
3- A cooled-down, spare feel but still quite fast. Late-night smoky rooms, warm.
4- Spirited solo-sax intro. Then a halting upbeat theme, a nice bass/drums swirl, and a mid/fast, calm jazz stroll to end it.
5- Soulful and squirrely, not too fast. A nice head-bobber with intense sax solos.
6- Mellow midtempo, warm; consistent feel even though it mashes together three tracks. Applause ending; you'll want to FADE OUT.

DISK TWO
1- New Orleans bluesy: heartwarming, wistful. Mid/fast.
2- Screwy improv for a couple minutes, then a fairly fast, driving segment. Ends w/strong, almost Latin beat.
3- Sad "Inflated Tear" done mid/fast. Quiet intro. Gruff in the middle.
4- Pleasant mid/fast swaying, almost showtuney. Second half is a fast and sometimes vicious ride, great stuff.
5- Pleasant, lonely mid/fast shuffling, spare, a bit quiet. Second half gets funky: a strong mid/fast jam.
