*Slightly* more traditional jazz from free-jazz sax master Charles Gayle. All tracks tenor sax, bass, and drums, except 7, which is solo piano. (Holy crap that piano track is aweeeeesome.) Soulful playing, awesomely tight and intimate ensemble, with each instrument independent in a way that’s super interesting and addicting. A review I read mentioned “ecstasy” – it’s a good description.
1. Mid-tempo. Killer bass playing – I love how the sax and bass sound almost independent of each other, playing very different lines. The drums add just the right amount of randomness and cohesion.
2. Starts with speaking and a great laugh. Fast high-hat, swirly sax, near-samba bass. Awesome.
*3. Beautifully slow. Really good low sax sounds. Mmmm.
4. Quick and playful, free.
5. Slow wailing melody, again great strange harmonies betw. sax and bass.
*6. Solo piano. Amazing track – goes from straight jazz to hyper bop, to blues, to Cecil Taylor freak-out to peaceful scribbling (all mixed together!). All-over the map style-wise/mood-wise.
7. Mid-tempo, abstract – maybe the most meandering piece here.
*8. Blazing fast. squirrely. amazing drums. the sax simply screams at times. oh yeah. Some soft weird singing at 5:19 left, solo sections for all instruments at 4:10 left. No frills ending – just stops, mm.
