The Scorchers – Stuntin’ (Jump Up!)
Reviewed by Sadie O., 11/16/06
Roots ska/ 60’s Jamaican and American sounds from Brooklyn. Some real high points here, although most of them apparently involve a combination of herb and insanity, like the vocals on track 12 and the sax solo on track 15 and its dub on 16.
No FCCs. Track 12, 15-16 are gems.
1. 3:48 *drum and bass intro, midtempo swingy ska with lots of horns. Instrumental.
2. 3:18 **uptempo ska, rather odd male vocals
3. 3:16 *midtempo steady rolling rock steady, cover of the Burt Bacharat 60’s classic.
4. 3:20 *slow and steady ska beat, Wailers cover, female chorus.
5. 3:35 ***long intro, into slow ska beat with nyahbinghi drums, lots of horns. Instrumental.
6. 3:10 **bass intro, somewhat uptempo ska instrumental
7. 1:47 **nice little guitar line, slow Latin-tinged conga line instrumental
8. 2:54 *midtempo 60’s feel with female vocals. Farfisa solo!
9. 3:45 **slow dance a la Santo and Johnny but with horns, instrumental.
10. 3:41 *slow ska with nyahbinghi drums, female vocals.
11. 3:27 ***ponderous organ intro, then uptempo ska instrumental.
12. 3:41 ****midtempo roots rock skank, hilariously weird male vocals. What a sick joke, letting this guy sing!
13. 4:09 ***drum intro, uptempo ska
14. 2:23 *** uptempo rock steady, male vocals, nice female chorus
15. 5:04 ****very cool midtempo skank, booty wiggler, instrumental. Absolutely nutted sax solo.
16. 3:06 ***slower version of track 16, dubbed up.
17. 1:57 slow number with nice bass line, female vocals.
