Straight post-bop quartet with a restrained, sad quality -- because it's a tribute to the late Malachi Thompson (Art Ensemble of Chicago). Veteran players fronted by Billy Bang (violin) and Ari Brown (sax/piano). A tribute to Malachi Thompson (Art Ensemble of Chicago), so it's got a restrained and sad feel while also being celebratory.

Rich African influence including the use of kalimba (thumb piano) in place of drums on 2 and 4.

1- Upbeat midtempo, a bit funky
2- Gentle, even mournful, with kalimba
3- Nicely digging groove, mid/fast
4- Soft, slow, with sax and sparkly kalimba. Simple figure.
5- Mid/fast, softly rolling jam; active solos. Mildly African feel.
6- Heavy African drums, sinewy theme. Pulse-pounding.
7- Gently sad song: vocals and slowly swinging piano. Touching, simple.
