Craig Matsumoto Reviewed 2007-02-08 | ||
A mostly straight-jazz feel with some nicely open spaces for soloing, and some jazzy improvised tracks with a friendly, informal air. Trumpeter Groder leads the session, with legend Sam Rivers and his longtime trio as his backup band! Very nice stuff if you want a solid "jazz" sound. For a more "typical" head-solos-head format, try 3 or 8, or (more subtly) 11. 1- Cool jazzy trumpet doodles 2- Low-key but propulsive, a bit sinister. Ends w/upbeat theme. 3- Bright, mid/fast 4- Nice twilight-sounding duet, flute and trumpet, kind of fast 5- Flute and muted trumpet: Chipper, brisk 6- Slightly sad, but mid/fast, trumpet-bass duet 7- Bare start, into rather bubbly group improv 8- Mid/fast, a lightly brash '60s sound 9- Casual sax/trumpet duo 10- Cool-handed, mid/fast 11- Old-fashioned stroll, just bass and trumpet 12- Crisp trumpet/sax duet 13- Smoky tenor sax leads a cookin' group improv 14- Slowish reverent feel, heavy quiet tribal drums |
