Yabby You – Deliver Me From My Enemies (Blood & Fire) Reviewed by Sadie O., 12/18/06 Collection of tracks from the 70’s by a lesser-known roots legend, producer and vocalist. Cool, if not terribly unique and arresting, but a nice slice of music from arguably the golden age of Reggae. Bonus tracks from 12 on are the real prize, 12” mixes that include the version and toast, and a couple of gnarly dubplates. No FCCs. Track 2 (dub version) and 12-15 are best by me. 1. **slightly downtempo roots rock skank with nice horn section and harmonies, righteousness lyrics. 2. ***seriously dubbed up version of track one. 3. **midtempo roots bubble with fairly interesting, thick sound, Rasta lyrics. 4. *downtempo and downbeat skank w/ a bit of farfisa, prominent bass. 5. **midtempo roots bubble with lots of horns and guitar, instrumental. 6. *dramatic and rather offkey intro, slightly uptempo skank, repatriation lyrics. 7. **somewhat uptempo Rock Steady, classic sound and vibe. 8. **sweet midtempo Lover’s Rock 9. **slightly downtempo bubble with lots of farfisa, Babylon fall lyrics 10. **midtempo bubble, cool music and harmonies, Rasta lyrics. 11. *downtempo bubble, quasi-Amharic lyrics 12. ***midtempo bubble with lots of cool hand percussion, great (if often offkey) vocals, fun old school toast by Trinity. 13. ***a bit downtempo with lots of harmonies, free Africa lyrics, another nice toast from Trinity. 14. ****slightly downtempo, prominent vocal harmonies. Nice horns & dub in second (version) half of song. Most of the instruments seem to get a bit too stoned to play after a while… 15. ****dub and toasting version of previous track. 16. **fuzzy dubplate version of track 10. Interesting, but not terribly clean production. 17. ****fuzzy and dubby version version of track 10… If you can handle the dirty sound, it’s gnarly as hell. |
