Downtempo, minimal folk rock lullabies. Gentle, deep male vocals. The quiet underlines the musical & emotional intensity. Mostly voice & acoustic guitar, spiced with pedal steel, string bass, & some other treats. Lyrics are (great) poetry. Includes some killer covers that sound nothing like the originals. Play with Tim Hardin, Lambchop, Boduf Songs, Spain, Red House Painters, Gravenhurst... & maybe even The Gris Gris and perhaps Eleni Mandell. All shockingly gorgeous. If I rated CDs I'd give this 5 out of 5. FCC indecent: 1. Start with 3, 6, 12, 16. 1. FCC indecent. Upbeat. "Ooh I need a dirty woman. Ooh I need a dirty girl." 2. (Beatles). Romantic Mersey pop reinterpreted as a lullaby. ==> 3. Slow & transcendent. 4. Happy sad. "If you don't come back to me I will go across the sea, and start a community based on what you did to me. And sustainability." 5. (David Bowie) Prominent string bass. Jazzy. ==> 6. Very Lambchop like, with some falsetto vocals. Very short. 7. A bit anthemic, as quiet ballads go. 8. Romantic story... sort of reminds me of A Prairie Home Companion. 9. (Black Sabbath) Up tempo, (a bit) Appalachian feel. features banjo. 10. (Screamin' Jay Hawkins) This one's recognizable. But damn it's intense. 11. (Prince) Dance pop recast as an almost medieval ballad. Very short. ==> 12. Banjo... very dark Appalachian feel. 14. Lilting melody with harmony vocals and plinky guitar. 15. (The Cars cover) Rhythmic... the only song here that includes percussion. Very recognizable but I think all the words (except the song name) are newly invented. ==> 16. A lullaby to close an album of lullabies. Guitar and processed vibraphone, I think. |
