Album Review

A lovely cacophonic jazz-electronica (instrumental) mixture from this Australian trio. This, their second album, is much fuller than 2004's 'Moment Returns' which had some brilliant music in its own right. This could also fit in with such 'post-rock' darlings as Tortoise (circa It's All Around You), Do Make Say Think, Parker Street Cinema, and Rachel's. The chaos and whimsy on some of the tracks bring to mind some Legendary Pink Dots material. As far as the material that's closer to jazz, well, I wish I could drop names or informed descriptions there, just see for yourself. Very original music, broadly inspired but still all of a piece, integrated, evocative and profound with lots of controlled energy, brilliant percussion, highly recommended. Songs are mostly moderate to lengthy.

Rec: all but start with 4, 7, 10 (then try 2, 6, 8)
FCC clean-- all tracks instrumental

1 Energetic cacophony changes to a more traditional free jazz piece, still energetic
2 Stunning, yes, cacophony (again), based around a bass line
3 short, beat-oriented piece, not particularly exciting
4 Cathartic, advanced, fast, bell-like drums, evolution and change in keys give a sense of buildup,
5 LONG, barely restrained noodling of drums and piano and ambience, becomes more relaxed in the final 2:00, lovely ending
6 slow, jazz-like, repetitive rhythm w/piano, backward tape noises and other noises
7 chaos and whimsy builds around a bass line, mad piano tune, great
8 slow, sparse but also evocative free jazz
9 ambient-electronica drone with piano, cindytalk
10 pensive with bass lines, drone, washes of sound, energy builds, backwards noises and piano
11 chaotic noise/experimental fades into piano ending
