AARON IRWIN GROUP – “Into the Light”
Fresh Sound/New Talent, 2006

MODERN JAZZ – Accessible downtown stuff with an elastic sense of time. As Irwin’s lithe, straightforward alto sax playing jostles with Rich Perry’s resilient tenor, Ryan Scott’s moody guitar and the mercurial rhythm section, the tunes seem to melt, with each soloist allowed to redefine the tempo at will. This approach sometimes creates a feeling of meandering self-indulgence, but also generates thoughtful dialogues, crunchy little grooves and moments of emotive power.

Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 6

1. 8:38 – standard ballad: languid, then bustling; seems to be slowly collapsing
2. 7:56 – agreeable but moody, maintains a fairly breezy pace, gritty guitar
3. 5:44 – slow & quiet, pensive melody. Nice sax, guitar lends a country touch
4. 7:38 – upbeat cool-bopper with wandering solos for everybody
5. 10:19 – standard with a mellow, very casual feel
6. 8:20 – overlapping, improvised feel, searching alto sax
7. 4:32 – snappy theme, insistent solos have suggestions of rock
8. 5:23 – relaxed Monk ballad, a reflective mood
