BANDA EL RECODO: Mas Fuerte Que Nunca
Fonovisa, 2006

Solid outing from one of the top Mexican banda outfits, a 16-man brass & clarinet ensemble with 3 singers that got its start in 1938 (but the current members are all pretty young). Textbook banda: blasts of tinny, harsh brass, tooty reeds, happy little bouncing tunes. But the disc is surprisingly varied within those bounds.

Note: #13 is a hit song, having been featured on a popular Univision telenovela (La Fea Mas Bella).

Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 5, 9, 11

1. uptempo, lotsa horn, very busy
2. slower, fun oom-pah arrangement
3. cheesy Vegas lounge vibe (!)
4. happy, with great clarinets / tuba
5. spoken intro, fun drinking song
6. upbeat march, fun vocals
7. slow, over-the-top drama
8. sounds like a hit pop song
9. super-perky, salsa-style
10. relaxed ballad, big horns
11. modern Caribbean bounce
12. sounds like #8 slowed down
13. hot, catchy, with a rap break!
14. “radio version” of #1
