PSYOPUS – "Our Puzzling Encounters Considered" CD (Metal Blade)
This album takes technical, over-the-top, math metal to new levels. Combining techie death metal with the new dissonant tech sounds of bands like DYLINGER ESCAPE PLAN all while played and ridiculous speeds. This will make your head spin trying to keep up with the jagged, stop-n-go, blasts of speed and guitar/drum acrobatics. Some bands playing music this complex often forgetting to write songs. Not these guys.
1. Discordant guitar and lots of stop-n-go parts. There is a really nice, mellow clean guitar, bass, drum interaction in the middle. Repetitive ending.
2. Odd effects at the beginning of the track. Backwards? Keyboards? Then the guitar slices in with a short quick riff. The rhythm and guitar/drum interaction on this is unbelievable. Vocals are brutal but sometimes spoken. Everything comes in shorts bursts.
3. Fade in, go! Unique guitar tone. This is over the top, heavy, with vocals you can understand.
4. FCC Short, fast, and the kitchen sink. Female backing vocals?
5. Super quick guitar riffs. This is all very, very fast, to the point where is sounds fake. Wanky guitar that I think is sorta funny.
6. Mellower jazzy guitar playing. It gets heavy for a little bit during the last minute but mellows out again. Instrumental.
7. FCC 30 second spazz out.
8. Fades into more of a techie death metal sound but it doesn't take long before some shredder guitar playing shows up and then their full on heavy, techie spastic sound.
9. Mellow clean guitar instrumental. Slightly classical and classic metal sounding.
10. FCCs Heavy.
11. Ridiculously complex, short, fast and heavy.
