Album Review

Large-group improv in an abstract vein, but with occasional rock segments (guitar, drums, heavy rhythm). Aggressive and fun. An "apocalyptic chamber orchestra," as the onesheet describes it, from NYC. Based on the conducted-improvisation work of Butch Morris (a local analogue would be Moe!kestra). It's got moments of wild abandon, but Cymerman keeps things under control, keeping the band unified as they bring the volume down or start new sections of what are apparently semi-composed works. Haven't heard of any of the musicians here, but whoever is on trumpet calls him/herself "The Sickness."

- Slowly declaratory intro. Shifts into a tense burble of horns. Kind of mid/fast throughout.
- Scratchy guitar freakout, into a loud clattery space. Gets into a hard-rocking rhythmic stomp.
- A mad fast scribble.
- Soft chiming, gently soaring violin/cello. Nice.
- Fast punk/industrial stomp, lotta guitar.
- Fairly fast and rockish, ends with a midtempo heavy rock beat and screaming sax.
- Big loud blur with strings and electric guitar. After 2 minutes, a squeaky loud violin(cello?) solo.
- Quiet start, into a midtempo hard-rock segment
