Yage Pinta! Psychedelic Shaman Songs of Santiago Mutumbajoy
Field recordings made by anthropologist Michael Taussig in the ‘70s in Colombia. Shaman Mutumbajoy takes the hallucinogenic drink “yage” and conducts healing sessions. Not strictly speaking “music,” but a truly fascinating glimpse at shamanism. The tracks all sound the same, though varying in tempo. Jungle noises and general sounds of life plus rattles act as a background to the shaman’s growling/humming/sing-songy chants. Also coughing, spitting, and other noises. Occasionally the voice of Taussig (in Spanish). Amazing world, isn’t it folks?
