Old-timey and easygoing singer/songwriter fare with more than a touch of schmaltz. Swift's pleasantly reedy vox sit nicely over pop piano, picked guitar and the standard orchestra of alternate instrumentation (brass, percussion, strings, etc. etc.) kept tastefully low in the mix. The overall feel is thick, sweet, and sorrowfully nostalgic, staying mostly in the low- to mid-energy regime. Overall, a good listen, though less stunning than his fantastic debut. FCC Clean. My picks: 2, 4, 6 See also: Randy Newman, Rufus Wainwright 1. 3:55 - Languishing vox melody over swung clapping rhythm and an easygoing brass interlude. *2. 3:12 - Smooth and jazzy, with rolling rockabilly piano. 30-sec fade out straight to next song. 3. 4:50 - Upbeat, laid-back, and catchy, though a trifle repetitive. A bit Beach-Boysish. *4. 4:05 - Soft electro beat under a beautiful ballad. Gets more heavy at -1:30. Not FCC, but repeated line "Jesus Christ, you're a lovely thing" may bug some people. 15-sec out. 5. 2:23 - Dark, self-effacing piano ballad. Very pretty. ***6. 3:11 - Theatrical piano oom-pah with lyrical nods to Brian Wilson. Very fun. 7. 3:24 - Anthemic piano pop. Similar to 6, but slightly darker. Nice music-hall hook. 8. 5:00 - Sad piano ballad of the "what have I done?" school. 9. 3:47 - Ambling, happy island feel with semi-despairing lyrics ("I wish I was dead most of the time but I don't really mean it...") 10. 2:12 - Brief, low energy layered closer about John the Baptist. 50-sec fadeout. |
