LAFAYETTE GILCHRIST: 3
Hyena, 2007

Gilchrist is a hard-hitting pianist out of Baltimore, who cut his teeth in David Murray’s bands. He’s stripped his own band down to a trio for his third album, which gives his edgy/funky style a new rawness. He really hammers at his unusual melodies, with lots of insistent little repeated phrases and variations, while drums & electric bass keep up a steady beat. It’s brash, swaggering, virtuosic, but best in small doses.

Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 3, 6

1. 9:24 – fast and funky, with big, stabbing piano chords & slippery runs
2. 5:32 – offbeat street corner groove & slide, chugging beat
3. 7:15 – up/mid, shifting chords, seems always on the verge of something
4. 8:40 – relaxed, soulful but viewed through a cracked or warped lens
5. 7:20 – midtempo stroll with a seething energy, seems to slap itself around
6. 5:41 – blues, thick & heavy with nifty “old-school meets postmodern” piano
7. 10:16 – blocky, squared-off groove, slightly ghoulish piano
