Album Review

Bassist Steinbeck arranges accessible jazz that incorporates straight beats (“hip hop” as the one sheet says, but they don’t strike me that way so much) as well as ensemble New Orleans flavors, bebop and improv. Nothing “out there” or downtown freaky, instead entirely listenable and pleasant without being boring or pandering. Heavy bent on trombones, brass. Some good vibe/upright bass interactions.

1) starts smarmy hip-hoppish smarmy beat, slop here and there with the trombones, fun, but midway shifts to a standard walking bassline lounge feel
2) experimental digeridoo with percussion, ¾ way through it turns to a “lament”, slowly phrased jazz
3) starts as a chill vibes jazz, then slinks into a sleazy New Orleans slow blues
4) chill brass at first then goes upbeat 6/4 time jazz
5) starts off experimental percussion, light vibes and upright
6) just a slow smarmy swing to this, sleezy trumpet, cool cat jazz
7) standard bebop (“freebop”) free jazz ensemble feel
8) brief idea of song
9) slow phrased, vibes and upright
10) another brief song idea
11) pleasant, “R&B” cut (?) with good trombone melodies
12) slow dark upright with vibes solo over it, sometimes getting wacked out, but mostly chill
