DINO SALUZZI & ANJA LECHNER: Ojos Negros ECM, 2007 WORLD/JAZZ – Tango-based duets for bandoneon (accordion) and cello, part chamber music, part folksong, part jazz improvisation. There is a lot of heavy atmosphere and emotion, but also a gentleness that makes these pieces inviting and compelling. Good for quiet moments. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 5, 6 1. 4:16 – slow and moving: starts a bit heavy, turns classical, ends folksy 2. 6:56 – melancholy Argentine folk, brighter in the middle and at the end 3. 8:38 – bandoneon intro, slow & sad with tango break; fine interplay here 4. 6:00 – heavy: slides into a sad, dark place, then a quietly slashing rhythm 5. 5:48 – informal interplay, a lighter tone than the other tracks but still deep 6. 10:15 – slow tone poem, roams through classical, tango, improv moods 7. 6:25 – spare, with vague melody, sweet cello, lots of space 8. 8:43 – slow, with long tones and slightly uncomfortable harmonies, builds [ Fo ] 13-Jun-07 | ||
