Holy CRAP! Lee Hazlewood leaves us a brand new cd, touted as his “swan song”, containing brilliant new songs many with contemporary themes, others with classic love-gone-wrong ones. The instrumentation is excellent, although very slick a-la 70’s television (don’t expect any Calexico airyness that would do him right). Great new songs, don’t pass up while going directly to the dark twangy version of “Boots” (made famous of course by Nancy Sinatra), or the version of “Phaedra” sung by his granddaughter. This is unbelievable stuff by the man who influenced all your Nick Caves, Calexicos, Becks, Pulps, Sonic Youths and had a huge impact on popular music throughout the 60’s. Songs feature many lovely duets with female chanteuses as well as guest vocals.

1) smarmy swinging lounge jazz “she said ‘nothing’”, duet with kittenish female singing in German
2) “Baghdad Nights”, timely theme, cool guitar hook
3) reworking of “Please Come to LA” (she just said no, boy wont you come home to me), nice duet with
4) guest vocals, sorta new country feel but really a carribean flavor
5) minor feel about a bad girl, great
6) waltzing regal feel, with a “shot of some bach” in the middle, brilliant
7) awesome twangy Spanish flavor, sexy
8) more of a somber ballad tone
9) an anthem to his life, even ends with the star spangled banner theme
10) “a white people thing”, brilliant, ironically bluesy, talking about suburban and white things, play!
11) amazing dark twangy version of his biggest hit (Nancy Sinatra), enough said
12) an arranged version of his most popular song with hipsters, with a spoken explanation by him, then sung by his granddaughter “Phaedra”!!!!!!
13) is this his “swan song”? its just lovely
