RON CARTER: Dear Miles
Blue Note, 2007

MAINSTREAM JAZZ – Carter, a master bassist who was a part of Miles Davis’ great 1960s quintet, offers a warm tribute to his former bandleader. The quartet (piano/bass/drums/perc) sticks to an easily digested straight-ahead sound, crisp and lively with lots of personality. Probably too light for many at KZSU, but it’s inviting and well done.

Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 6, maybe 7

1. 4:47 – mid/uptempo, careful theme and breezy solos
2. 4:53 – somewhat speedy romp through a popular classic; bongo solo!
3. 8:03 – gentle ballad, interesting rhythmic twists, becomes a midtempo walk
4. 3:42 – cute, happy, a lightly swinging stroll
5. 6:44 – light, airy standard, some odd piano phrases sneak in
6. 4:35 – stuttering themes, speedy solo w/tricky piano, supple bass
7. 5:02 – easygoing ballad with melodic bass out in front
8. 4:58 – breezy supper-club feel, playful piano, warm bass…
9. 5:27 – …and another one just like it, but with more interesting piano
10. 4:36 – nice & relaxed, tiptoes carefully around Miles’ “So What” riff
