ZERO POINT: Plays Albert Ayler Ayler Records, 2007 FREE JAZZ – Mexican trio performs seven Albert Ayler tunes and two original improvisations, live at the Jazzorca club in Mexico City, September 2006. The mix is heavy on the bass, with the sax & drums hanging in the near background. Lots of energy and intensity, but a little more variety in tempo & texture would’ve been nice. Fo’s Picks: 2, 5, 6, 8, 9 1. 4:09 – insistent, screeching sax, uptempo bass solo, rolling drums 2. 3:45 – twisted bugle call leaps into a speedy pile-up, knotty & dense 3. 4:32 – dialogue over tumbling drums, speeds & slows, fast bass solo 4. 5:14 – sax squeaks & cackles, gets fairly fast & squirrelly, then crashes 5. 5:45 – quiet squeaking into aggressive popping, dense bass, clattery drums 6. 6:25 – thick & intense, repeated sax phrases, falls back to just a framework 7. 7:55 – duo, no bass: fast, sour sax; drums are just nuts with lots of cymbal 8. 7:38 – duo, no bass: starts spare, excellent drums; high, squeaky sax 9. 3:04 – relatively relaxed & spacious, twisted “last dance” melody [ Fo ] 1-Jul-07 |
