NED ROTHENBERG: Inner Diaspora
Tzadik, 2007

CHAMBER JAZZ – Wow! Beautiful, entrancing album with clarinetist Rothenberg exploring elements of his Jewish identity. But it doesn’t necessarily sound “Jewish.” Instead, strings and tabla give the album a sense of global roots, melding classical, klezmer, and Asian elements.

Fo’s Picks: 1-4, but it’s all fabulous.

1. 12:01 – upbeat melody, interweaving harmony, great violin and cello solos, quick tabla, slows down for some excellent, soulful clarinet.
2. 11:43 – slow, impressionistic opening with outstanding strings, then upbeat folksy fantasia: fantastic solos all around, esp. cello, violin, clarinet
3. 06:13 – cold, atmospheric: otherworldly shakuhachi, quiet textures, voice
4. 10:30 – midtempo, exotically cinematic feel: climbing violin, nimble pizzicato cello, flying clarinet over tense strings, flowing bass & tabla
5. 08:28 – mideastern touch: solo bass intro, snake-like undulating flow w/sax
6. 13:23 – sneaky, cinematic – like time is running out – with playful tension and slightly mechanical rhythms; switches to slow, somber strings halfway through; ends in a quick, paranoid pulse.
