MARTYR - "Feeding the Abscess" CD (Galy)
Excellent progressive metal from Canada. It is progressive, yes as in progressive rock, with somewhat complicated tracks and time signatures. It is also death metal and melodic death metal at that. The vocalist screams in a way you can understand a lot of the time. This is some of the best production I've heard on a record this heavy, produced by Pierre Remillard who's also produced CRYPTOPSY and THE END. MARTYR remind me a good bit of CYNIC and ATHEIST. Their singer/guitar player has been in CAPHARNAUM, GORGUTS, and CRYPTOPSY.
1. Tight, quick metal chords. I can't believe you can hear the bass in this heaviness. I think the vocals come across a little on the stiff end.
**2. Starts choppy and minimal but kicks into some amazing riffs. Arty sounding, especially for metal. Half the vocals are gruff and harder to understand. There is a sample from what sounds like a scifi movie.
**3. FCC. (shut the fuck up) More melodic with some guitar gymnastics and a prog sound.
**5. Faster, heavier and lots of changes.
6. Stop-n-go/choppy. The middle portion goes through a lot of changes and is very progressive sounding.
7. Both clean and gruff vocals. Hard to describe, there is nothing really wrong with this track, it just doesn't turn me on.
8. Some spoken word type vocals, circular sounding riff. Unique chords. Thrashes during the second half of the track.
**9-12. These tracks run together and seem to be different parts of a whole. They only total 8.5 minutes. Extremely progressive, complicated with many different sounds that don't show up on the rest of the album. Reminds me a bit of MESHUGGAH. Crazy start/stop guitar ticks at the end of track 9. Track 10 has a jazzy quiet interlude. Track 11 is ambient and quiet and track 12 is fast and heavy.
13. Scifi sounding including spoken vocals run through some effects. Almost funny.
Good stuff -mph
