Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend
Reviewed 2007-07-24
Earth continues their deconstruction of all things doom and heavy. Big hollow guitars played slowly, glacial arpeggios, with equivalent drums, piano, minimal, crashing, rising and falling, hypnotic. Dark doomy melodies. All instrumental. Like the band Low had they been born-again devil worshipers instead. Like the Swans had they been living out on the lowlands of West Texas and stolen Johnny Cash’s guitars en route. Mind you, this is the band that gave birth to Sunn((O))) and other heavy drone that crosses over to metal. Instead they have crawled over to another limb on the musical phylogenic tree, and found the hypnosis in the twang. Personnel include Dylan Carlsen and other old friends of Cobain (who appeared on their first releases in the late 80’s). Don’t be surprised when you hear twangy slidey stuff straight outta Nashville (huh?!? Check it!)

1) decidedly doomy, melodic in that sense, slow with some organ, almost songlike
2) more of a chordal exploration of each note of each guitar chord, some western twang
3) piano arpeggios in same vein, sustained note guitars smack of Fripp or something
4) slow to evolve masterwork of this record (all of side B), this is the shit they are so good at
