The Shimmys – Drive You Wild!
Reviewed by Sadie O., 8/1/07
60’s garage punk chick rock for today. Guitar/bass/drum/chick vocals with occasional farfisa for tang, seasoned with mega huge attitude and a will to rock. Fun booklet, too. Just simple fun and badness, for those of us who still like to get out our go-go boots and twist and frug and do the goddam swim, baby, yeah!
No FCCs detected (lots of fuzz on the vocals, but I don’t think so…)
All killer, no filler, but I like 5 and 9 and especially 10 best.
1. 0:45 *60’s big beat RNR, “Tobacco Road” rhythm.
2. 2:47 ***punk guitar, farfisa, major frugging, attitude. Yay!
3. 2:24 **a bit of “I Can’t Explain”, lots of teen angst and guitar. Nice gender reversal in the lyrics…
4. 2:13 ***motor revving, scary biker chick attitude, downtempo punky jerk. Completely fuzzed out guitar solo wins an extra star.
5. 2:21 ****hyperactive land of 1000 dances, nice bassline, rock the hell outa your slacks!
6. 2:07 ***injun whoops, slow Hanky Panky guitar line, yells – channeling as much Link Wray as they can manage. Yay!
7. 2:35 ***garage cover of the 60’s dance classic.
8. 2:27 **Bo Diddley beat, retribution on lame ex-boyfriend lyrics.
9. 2:43 ****midtempo frug and farfisa, very young-sounding vocals, cutting guitar solo. Attitude and then some.
10. 2:30 *****oh hell yeah - jungle stomp, litany of boys’ names (con gusto!), hyperactive farfisa and guitar chorus for punctuation.
11. 2:47 **do the pony! Uptempo guitar romp through the early Beatles classic.
12. 0:54 *bookend to the intro.
