Three More Shallows – “Book of Bad Breaks”

I was excited to see that the great Anticon label (Why?, Dosh…etc.) was hyping Three More Shallows Book of Bad Breaks. They even went so far as to call Book of Bad Breaks “…a damn fine album from a band at the height of its powers.” The album started off quite strong, but eventually became somewhat boring (especially the drums). Personally, I am looking for better beats and drums and lyrical delivery from an Anticon band. It is an interesting listen, but hopefully (for Three More Shallows sake) not from a band “at the height of its powers.” Check out #3 though…it’s a good one. (BEST TRACKS = 3,10,13).

1) Short intro that streams to track 2
2) Nice into. Fuzzy Guitar, bouncy keys, and sharp drums. More poppy lyrics that I would expect from Anticon label. Droning keys at times. Horns at end.
3) Futuristic sound in the beginning. Dance beat, ominous dark keys, and robotic lyrics. Song picks up and sounds KICK ASS halfway through.
4) Interesting dark keys to start. Dance beats in the background. Powerful drums enter and lyrics get more urgent.
5) Interlude #1. Pretty strings turn into scary electronic nightmare.
6) Nightmare continues…then opens up to a brighter spot for a brief moment. Turns back to fast drums and chunky guitar. Playful xylophone softens song and turns to piano.
7) Gloomy Strings to start. Dark guitar and simple dance beat. Lyrics sound like weak???
8) Whistling keys for intro. Song breaks into a fast drumming and a single dark droning guitar. Soft, whiny lyrics.
9) Interlude #2. Pretty Strings.
10) Loud (and simplistic) drum beat. Lonely sounding lyrics. Subtle bass and keys.
11) Sitar, (simple) drums, and droning keys. The best lyrics yet so far! Gets boisterous towards the end.
12) Thunderous Drums and droning keys. Softened by a quiet glockenspiel. Experimental sound.
13) Short song (1:48). Laser-like keys. Robotic lyrics sound great. Slow drums. Humming distorted strings.
