JOHN SANTOS QUINTET: Papa Mambo Machete, 2007 LATIN JAZZ – After 20+ years leading his acclaimed big band (the Machete Ensemble), this Bay Area percussionist debuts his new small group… bringing 20 guests along for the ride. A very fine mix of Puerto Rican and Cuban styles, with some excellent performances. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 5, 6, 7 1. 7:25 – soulful groove: chant, great trumpet & lead vox, relaxed timbales 2. 5:43 – happy descarga: nice bass solo, graceful flute, jamming percussion 3. 5:13 – rolling midtempo: friendly flute, cool trumpet, piano, timbales solos 4. 6:15 – New Orleans groove: great opening, trumpet solos, scat vocals! 5. 5:15 – Afro-Cuban: chant & flute over modern groove, nice percussion 6. 5:20 – happy Cuban tune, an upbeat conversation with warm vocals 7. 5:29 – lovely lullaby over a Puerto Rican rhythm; throaty lead vocal 8. 5:36 – sweetly rolling tune, sing-song flute melody, serious breaks 9. 6:53 – elegant danzón-mambo with violins, dramatic piano break 10. 7:07 – romantic vocal, busy percussion, trumpet breaks, large chorus [ Fo ] 11-Aug-07 | ||
