BLUEPRINT PROJ. + HAN BENNINK: People I Like
Creative Nation, 2007

Upbeat avant-garde session, very quirky but not too far-out. As you might expect, hyperkinetic drummer Bennink gives the music a great drive and unpredictable rhythmic twists. Jared Sims percolates merrily on saxes & clarinet, Eric Hofbauer plucks and punches on guitar and Tyson Roberts gently warps the view through his piano. Great fun!

Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8

1. 5:10 – loopy circus waltz… help, drunk clowns are molesting the audience!
2. 4:21 – happy, bouncy swing… old time jazz seen through a cracked lens
3. 5:25 – juxtaposed layers, like a mash-up of several tunes, fantastic drums.
4. 5:05 – happy little calypso-style island jaunt, perky sax
5. 4:36 – very cool mystery groove, breaks down and spins: great interplay
6. 2:54 – old-time stomp… is this happy or creepy? Jolly clarinet & piano.
7. 4:41 – slow & heavy, piano gives it cinematic atmosphere, grows crowded
8. 5:29 – Sort of a Monkish blues: sax honks, walking rhythm, nifty solo breaks
9. 5:26 – slow, moody ballad: sad sax over lightly tumbling trio; dark ending
