BRUCE EISENBEIL SEXTET: Inner Constellation, Vol. 1
Nemu, 2007
Mixing highly complex compositional themes with extended stretches of improvisation, Eisenbeil experiments with concepts such as drawing “constellations” from points in a six-octave “tone field,” while juxtaposing and heaping contrasting emotions and colors in a noisy, crashing pile. The band grew tangentially from a project by Cecil Taylor, who also served as inspiration for the composition. It’s wild!
Tracks 1-27 are a single, uninterrupted piece, divided into chunks ranging from 19 seconds to 5 minutes. Although meant to be heard all together, most of the tracks can work out of context (but obviously the endings will be pretty abrupt). Some of the longer tracks…
2. knotty guitar, angular melody
5. violin & guitar solo over fast drums
10. calm trumpet over surging band
11. relaxed jumble, sweet violin
15. speedy, melodic, pained sax solo
18. unresolved layers, bass/gtr solos
24. extended scratchy ambience
27. all comes together, melts away
28. scribbly, abstract guitar tones, bass & drums prowl in background
29. furtive conversation: lots of drums, squirrelly guitar & bass, groaning voice
30. relaxed acoustic guitar, rich drums, lots of space, pretty in an abstract way
