Mr. J. Medeiros: Of gods and girls Reviewed by Witz

Socially conscious hip-hop—mostly soulful, some club. Packed with soulful beats and rhymes, Of gods and girls is the first solo album by Echo Park, Los Angeles crew The Procussions member Mr. J. Medeiros. The album is heavily soul influenced, but also has a few harder, club sounding tracks. Medeiros fits perfectly into the socially conscious hip-hop movement ala Atmosphere, The Blue Scholars, Lifesavas, et al.
FCC: 5

**1) Soulful, smooth, laid back love song. French section for second verse. Fades out and in again at 3 minute mark. SKIT w/ 30 seconds left. (5:06)
2) Soul-influenced track like The Blue Scholars and Tupac. Good lyrics/beat. (3:45)
3) Slow, airy beat. “I wish I had the courage to say to you/all the words in this song I play for you.” SKIT w/ 30 secs left. (4:03)
*4) The single—a narrative of a young girl that remarks on the horror of the adult entertainment internet industry. Good track, but definitely not a “Fun” song. (3:34)
5) FCC: “fuck” at 1 min. Soulful with guest MC’s. Social issues discussed. (3:49)
**6) Up-tempo beat with Indian sound. Good scratching and harder lyrics. ENDS w/ skit 1 minute. (5:08)
7) Laid back social soul song. Well done, but not anything new. (3:45)
*8) Harder, angrier sounding track that eases up at the hook. “Believe in yourself” theme. ENDS w/ 45 second skit. (3:39)
9) Feat. Pigeon John. Clangy, clashy track about money and materialism. (3:07)
10) Nice soul and jazzy beat and rhymes. Talks about a girl. (2:54)
11) Cool, different beat with interesting elements. Slow, but flowing; about apathy-- a little redundant sounding by the end. (4:45)
12) Last track before bonus songs. Poppy, airy, beat. Tough tale of a girl. (3:27)
*13) Up-tempo with fast lyrics. Less produced, but a catchy track. (2:28)
14) REMIX of 4. WORSE—poorly produced and weak beat. (3:47)
15) REMIX of 2. Sounds more “street” and less produced. Good horns. (4:04)
16) REMIX of 8. Synthesizer and choppier, w/o angry beat. Sounds like Jay-Z. (3:01)
