J.K. HWANG & S.W. PARK: Local Lingo
Euonymous, 2007

Creative new music with an Asian outlook and a timeless sound. These duets place Hwang’s supple, clear violin against Park’s mysterious-sounding Korean zithers (the bowed ajeng and plucked kayagum) in atmospheric compositional/improv spaces that can be unsettling (1,4) inviting (2) or enigmatic (3, 5).

All very good. Take your pick.

1. 08:57 – sweet violin & groaning ajeng: slow call & response, then stark and dramatic interplay: stabbing, wailing, weeping, chugging.
2. 06:54 – relaxed Korean folk song: pretty tune, plain vocal, turns bluesy!
3. 15:07 – thoughtful violin swims through rubbery kayagum tones; picks up a sort of walking rhythm, then long, slow solos for each. The kayagum is just amazing, it sounds sampled or effected, but it isn’t…
4. 09:05 – slashing, sawing bowed lines unite & clash; then classical-folksy violin dances, occasionally rejoining with ajeng for crushing power.
5. 07:25 – slow solo/duo variations on a theme, sliding and strange.
