BYUNGKI HWANG: Best of Korean Gayageum Music Arc, 2007 Traditional Korean music by one of its foremost modern composers, mostly gentle works focusing on the 12- or 17-string gayageum zither. Although Hwang composed all of the music here, he performs on the first 12 tracks only. This CD is a series of suites, which can be played whole or as individual tracks. Very nice stuff. All nice. Fo’s Picks: 3, 4, 8, 9, 10, 11, 15, 20, 22 1-5: 17-string zither with minimal accents from janggu drum, lots of interesting meters (esp. #3). Each track is a little faster than the last. 6-9: quietly emotive and mysterious zither & drum; a very deliberate, steady pace & some cool string techniques; #9 has harplike sound. 10-12: 12-string zither & drum, an exotic sound: 10 has weeping quality, 11 is direct & melodic, 12 is speedy and spinning. 13: solo bamboo flute: lyrical, then stark w/ extended technique, spoken break. 14-17: earthy 6-string picked zither & drum, stern and dramatic. 15 a bit bluesy. 18: very sad folksong with female vocal, full of long swooping tones; lovely 19-21: suite based on two poems about tea. 19 is a short, lively instrumental. 20 & 21 are slow with pretty female vocals. 22: vocal song, very expressive, with impressive range from the singer [ Fo ] 19-Mar-08 | ||
