THELONIOUS MONK: Live at the 1964 Monterey Jazz Festival
MJF, 2007

This live set finds Monk’s quartet presenting his usual mix of original tunes in an unusual arrangement. Steve Swallow, then age 23, is on bass – this was his only performance with Monk, done with zero rehearsal beforehand. And the last two tracks add five additional horns for a big-band sound. The audio quality’s a bit rough on this one, but it still has Monk’s quirky swing, oddball chords and generally joyful air.

Fo’s Picks: 3, 4, maybe 2 & 6

1. 10:40 – laid-back & bluesy; soulful sax, everybody takes a solo
2. 10:04 – medium pace: relaxed sax, jabbing piano, quiet bass, rolling drums
3. 09:36 – jaunty bounce: nice loose sax, fun piano eases into bass solo
4. 08:44 – uptempo jump, Monk really playful against strutting sax
5. 09:00 – slightly sour medium tempo, bright horn solos, Monk takes it easy
6. 11:03 – upbeat bounce, punchy horns (esp. trumpets), nifty piano solo
