Mostly Dancehall, Reggae, and a couple of soca tracks. Some of these are hitting the dancefloors in Jamaica right now. Lots of them are very good, some are pretty odd. The first 9 tracks feature a slight remix of the classic Shanty Town music, the last 4 tracks have riddims by Sly and Robbie.
No FCCs detected, I like tracks 2, 6 and 11 best, although 21 has points for oddness.
1. 3:40 ***Tracks 1-9 are the Shanty Town Riddim – if you don’t know that song… pick up on it! Dancehall vocals, Rasta message – quite good.
2. 4:12 ****Nutted dancehall vocals, goofy take-off on the original lyrics. Maybe I’m incredibly infantile, but I think this is just great…
3. 3:08 **dancehall vocals and singing, love song.
4. 3:33 ***almost incomprehensible (but enjoyable) dancehall vocals, something about a woman…
5. 3:12 **dancehall vocals, nice voice, come-on lyrics.
6. 3:51 ****really nicely done dancehall vocals with lots of variety.
7. 4:04 **more dancehall vocals, about… I dunno!
8. 3:07 singing about sex, I think.
9. 4:06 ***the Shanty Town “version” (instrumental) – mostly the original music, plus horns. Midtempo and just like sugar.
10. 3:35 ***great soca beat, the clean version of something that I suspect was VERY naughty, now pretty much a dance thing.
11. 3:04 ****terrific minimalist soca beat – resistance is futile! Interesting but mostly incomprehensible vocals.
12. 3:30 **downtempo dancehall, both dancehall and hip hop vocals.
13. 3:38 **classic Ninja Man dancehall tune with new toast, a bit of hip hop rap.
14. 4:02 ***downtempo combo of soca and one-drop skank, very pretty singing, party-time lyrics.
15. 3:03 *fast dancehall, banal “dance girl” lyrics, but rather cool militant riddim.
16. 4:25 **midtempo sweet bubble, pretty singing by long-time star. Simple, nice message.
17. 4:25 ***same sweet bubble as previous track, dancehall vocals, Rasta lyrics about not burning pot plants. Long fade.
18. 4:24 ***long random intro, then slow skank by Sly & Robbie, father and son vocal duet. Abrupt end.
19. 3:53 **syndrum intro, another slow skank by Sly & Robbie (same riddim next two tracks), love song.
20. 3:44 ***same riddim, more syndrum, pretty singing and opportunity to hear the fine music. Mournful lyrics about Baltimore…
21. 3:53 **same riddim, rather freaky falsetto singing. It’s supposed to be seductive, but I find it hilarious…
