Alma Mahler Reviewed 2008-07-05 | ||
Catchy, guitar-rock pop from this prolific indie songwriter. "Coast to Coast..." is straight power pop, while "Standard Gargoyle Decisions" is the harder rock stuff. Good solid work, yet some of these tracks feel redundant. Very accessible. FCC 1.12 Disc 1 1)* Nice harmonies, clean rock tune 2) Straight rock guitar and drums, melody softens halfway through 3) Slow tune, lovely vocal work 4)* Pop, bright & catchy 5)** Classic meandering GBV pop 6) Guitar anthem, pretty standard 7)** Great rhythm, full sound, well-rounded song 8)* Melancholic rock anthem 9) Darker, almost ominous tune 10)* Great vocals, bright melody 11) Harder rhythm with some interesting flat tones 12) Very catchy (FCC) 13) Acoustic, 70s rock feel 14)* Opens with drums & driving electric guitar, vocal effects 15) Playful vocals, acoustic guitar. Drums, effects enter ~1:00. 16)* Very catchy pop, soft & sweet breakdown toward end of song Disc 2 1) Some good guitar stuff on this one 2)* Interesting 70s hair metal sound...breaks to slow more typical Bob stuff 3) Heavy - great drums, echoey vox 4) Upbeat, bluesy rockin' tune. 5) Slightly psychedelic pop tune 6)** Shorty but real goody - just Bob, guitar. 7) Playing at Tom Waits vox 8) Weird rhythms in this one 9)* Stripped down pop rock w/ cool organ riff 10)** Punk rock Bob 11) Slowed down ballad 12)* Meandering, psychedelic rock 13) Rather bland rock tune 14)** Good structure, beats 15) Interesting guitar effects on this one 16)* Sweet lo-fi lullaby 17) Opens with "Spoonful" riff, runs off into fast punky rock |
