Craig Matsumoto Reviewed 2007-11-18 | ||
Chamber session, duets of piano with sax or clarinet. Compositions heavy on melody, quite a classical concert-hall air, although some tracks get looser and playful. For those who'd played the Myra Melford duo CD with Tanya Kalmanovich ... this stuff is more formalized and clean, as opposed to some of the gritty improvising on that other CD. Still, there's room in the songs for improvising and dialogue. An enjoyable session that should please fans of the ECM record label. 1- Mid/fast, a bit of Broadway bravado in the sax. 2- Cascading ocean waves. Serious mood, fairly fast piano 3- Mid/fast. 4- Lush and slow intro, Gershwin overtones. A bit more stern after the piano solo. 5- Twisty free jazz, the most aggressive track 6- Slowish; pleasantly mysterious. Very ECM-like. 7- Playfully rambling exercise with clarinet. Light jazzy mood. 8- Soaring grand-ballroom jazz 9- Gospel feel, mid/fast but comforting and grand |
