’63 Burnout – Trouble at the Speedway
Reviewed by Sadie O., 10/23/07
Gnarly surf/garage/rockabilly/psychedelic/rock power trio instrumentals from Seattle. Nothing intellectually taxing here, just good palate-cleansing guitar, bass and drums.
No FCCs – no vocals. Tracks 5 and 8 are acoustic guitar, track 13 is by nature a slow dance number, everything else tears it up.
1. 3:05 **hyperspeed jangly guitar and drums, surf/drag garage rock. Long feedback ending.
2. 2:39 **midtempo garage rock with a bit of whammy bar.
3. 2:40 **back to uptempo, guitar and bass in unison. Drum solo!
4. 3:58 ***whammy bar intro, then manic rockabilly bop. Nice bounce ‘n’ wham.
5. 2:57 *bass and drum intro, mellow acoustic guitar. A bit of a breather…
6. 2:03 **back to midtempo garage rock.
7. 3:47 ***menacing rhythm section, feedback and whammy bar… Midtempo, perfect for drag racing after midnight. Goes psychedelic in the last minute or so.
8. 2:27 *purty, folksy acoustic guitar. No rhythm section.
9. 3:02 **yikes! Back to hyperspeed garage rock! Hooray!
10. 3:43 ***Pipeline. Now, with new improved extra whammy bar! Turns heavily psychedelic.
11. 4:00 **a bit uptempo garage rock, bass and guitar play off against each other nicely. More psychedelia, but drums restore normalcy.
12. 3:18 **feedback and lots of fingerwork, steady rock, maybe with just a touch of the Byrds.
13. 3:33 **the Santo & Johnny classic, attempting to replicate pedal steel with whammy bar. Still a nice one to slow dance to…
14. 2:35 **no more slow dancing for you, punk! You just walked right into the middle of a rumble!
