David Morrison – One Day at a Time
Reviewed by Sadie O., 10/22/07
Straight up Roots Rock Reggae with gorgeous vocal harmonies. David Morrison has been a member of the renowned vocal trio the Abyssinians for several years, and he clearly knows all about vocal harmonies – he does all the vocals himself, and he does have a fantastic voice. The band are from Santa Cruz.
No FCCs detected. I like 3, 6, 8, and the dubs and versions at the end.
1. 0:25 pretty singing with nyahbinghi hand drum backing.
2. 4:28 *hand drum intro, builds to uptempo bubble. Very roots rock Reggae, Rasta lyrics.
3. 4:14 ***midtempo roots bubble with horn section. Terrific harmonies, great words.
4. 3:48 **bouncy skank – cover of Little Green Apples. Oddly, he takes writing credit!
5. 0:22 pretty singing and nyahbinghi hand drumming – hymn with slightly alarming lyrics.
6. 3:56 ***midtempo bubble with more terrific harmonies.
7. 4:02 **low-key intro, then bouncy midtempo bubble with rather strange combination of happy sounding music and tragic lyrics.
8. 4:05 ***downtempo skank, pretty cover of the Sam Cooke classic. Fittingly, it has the ring of a hymn.
9. 1:11 electronic R&Bish riddim, odd song telling a girl to go away…
10. 3:28 **Latin-flavored downtempo riddim. Rather odd, probably extemporaneous lyrics.
11. 3:53 **slightly downtempo feel-good skank, another Sam Cooke cover.
12. 0:35 static for a second or two, then singing with piano chords.
13. 3:36 *midtempo bubble with flute, love song.
14. 4:20 ***dub of track 3.
15. 3:54 **downtempo dub of track 11 (album listing has tracks 15 and 16 reversed)
16. 3:57 ***mostly instrumental version of track 7, so you get all the good feeling of the music and none of the sadness of the lyrics. Yay! The trombone really shines.
17. 4:33 **instrumental version of track 2 with prominent hand drum.
18. 0:49 *classic hymn, Nyahbinghi version. You can see the smoke…
