ALAN PASQUA: The Antisocial Club
Cryptogramophone, 2007

Funky oddball jazz with some avant-garde touches; it’s like a drug-fogged trip through some seedy 1970s urban underworld, but seen through a modern lens. Eclectic, cinematic, intoxicating, inscrutable.

All good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 4, 6, 7 … or 5 for weirdness

1. 9:49 – slurred lounge-lizard atmosphere + noisy breakouts, angular solos
2. 10:26 – funky retro strut, lots of reverb; cagey piano/keyboard solo, tweaked guitar takes off, weird burbling end
3. 5:45 – slow & atmospheric, tinkly keys & melancholy trumpet, leads into…
4. 7:58 – a thick stew of strange funk; good keyboard & trumpet solos.
5. 8:22 – weirdo stomping funk: stabbing horns, wild guitar, incessant beat
6. 9:08 – tense & cinematic, propulsive rhythm w/bongos, sneaky sax & keys
7. 4:48 – mysterious, very cinematic atmosphere: melody swells in the fog
