WIL BLADES: Sketchy
Doodlin, 2007

HAMMOND B3 ORGAN – Avoiding the organ trio cliché, this Bay Area artist makes his debut as a leader with three horns added to the mix. That extra texture, plus Blades’ light touch on the keys and a diverse set of original soul-bop tunes all make for a solid introduction.

Fo’s Picks: 2, 4, 5, 7, 8

1. 5:28 – easygoing swing, relaxed solos and a steady drumbeat
2. 6:00 – New Orleans groove: buttery trombone & organ, cool drum break
3. 6:20 – breezy bop ditty: cool sax trades off with gliding organ lines
4. 7:49 – lightly swinging ballad, nicely understated round of solos
5. 8:54 – catchy, funky tribute to Dr. Lonnie Smith; jams merrily along
6. 8:02 – lazy, moody ballad; relaxed organ & trombone solos, big ending
7. 8:04 – sassy strut, burns low with a New Orleans beat, good guitar solo
8. 8:08 – rolling groove with cool drums, sneaky melody line, great solos
9. 5:06 – slow, wide-open ballad, just organ & sax
10. 5:14 – cute little funky strut, at a steady midtempo pace
