STEVE LEHMAN QUINTET: On Meaning
Pi, 2007

Saxophonist Lehman, himself a rising star of the New York creative music scene, leads a band full of critical faves (including Drew Gress on bass and Tyshawn Sorey on drums) through a challenging set of innovative tunes that straddle the avant/postbop line. Excellent work all around, a great balance between compelling groove & oddball surprise.

All tracks worth checking out. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

1. 4:09 – propulsive, angular groove; brief solos pop out from the background
2. 3:31 – vibe musings over oddball rhythms & rising horns; excellent drums
3. 6:22 – shifting tempos, percolating horns; quirky, bemused sax; quick bass
4. 7:50 – smooth gliding rhythm; neat sax/trumpet harmony & cool solos
5. 6:43 – midtempo slide: solo bass intro, horns bob & weave in tight formation
6. 7:03 – very tricky shifting meter, but sax & trumpet solos ride it smoothly
7. 2:44 – like a bell tolling, interesting harmonic overtones & bent notes
8. 6:40 – detached rhythm, energetic trumpet, horn dialogue, curious sax
