Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend
Reviewed 2008-01-02
Analog synth/organic sample based creepy noise, not harsh overall but definitely not ambient. Layers and layers of mostly organic samples treated and looped with old analog synth tones for coloration. A very creepy feel to all of this, like some sort of muzak you’d hear in Anton Lavay’s summer cottage. This is some sort of collection of stuff done over the years from this Michigan outfit who had the pleasure of joining Sonic Youth on a major tour some years back (good for SY to bring them along! Viva la noise!). Many tracks feel like abridged versions, radio-friendly in length. All recorded live, no doubt.

1) quiet symphonic cinematic start, builds, sounds like the devil’s symphony tuning up
2) gunshots, then an intense tsunami of a rumbling distorto drone, crowd voices come up in last minute that contain FCCs so pot down after the music stops!!!
3) pensive symphonic electronics
4) layers of strange subtle samples
5) electronic, subtle tones over collage-like sounds, false ending in middle
6) very subtle creepiness, analog synth tones, creepy
7) industrial/mechanical sounds sampled in the weirdness
8) almost a mellow droniness, layers and layers of strange sounds
9) brief, a lovely low drony pulse
10) high frequency soundbed to creepy crawling tones, hypnotic
11) subtle metallic scraping, industrial sparseness
12) very chill high tones and horn-like sounds, more creepiness toward end
13) amalgam of electro-tones
14) long 30 minute track: more typical of Wolf Eyes, layers and moods of creep outs, harsh
