MOUTIN REUNION QUARTET: Sharp Turns Nocturne, 2007 MODERN JAZZ – Led by French twins François (bass) and Louis (drums) Moutin, this quartet has a supple modern sound, their tunes switching back and forth between elastic meditations and driving repetitive phrases. Very good mainstream stuff, but they’re better live. Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 6, 8 1. 6:41 – simple pensive theme: lithe sax solo, raindrop piano, busy bass 2. 5:58 – nifty clockwork riff becomes upbeat, churning dance, a li’l bit funky 3. 4:27 – bass/drum duet, quick-paced Coltrane lines and playful improvisation 4. 9:02 – slippery melody in a twitchy groove, tweaked-out keyboard 5. 7:49 – fragile piano intro; a soft, downy ballad, whispers & daydreams 6. 6:40 – wide stride, then hits on all cylinders: cool solos & strong riffs 7. 6:44 – solo bass intro; tough midtempo ballad, sing-song piano gets gusty 8. 8:38 – bold theme, fuzzy elec. piano, distracted sax, then methodical [ Fo ] 23-Mar-08 |
