PETER PAULSEN SEXTET: Change of Scenery
Wahbo, 2007

Bassist serves up tricky but accessible modern jazz featuring complex writing: lots of advanced harmonies, tempo shifts, etc. 4 & 5 have some definite “out” sections, but for the most part the sound stays cerebral and at medium speeds. It’s challenging and individualistic – there’s a lot of deep, conflicted emotion in here. Good, serious, arty jazz.

All interesting. Fo’s Picks: 2, 4, 5, 7

1. 09:48 – slowly surging horns with interesting harmonies, thoughtful solos
2. 07:37 – uptempo tension w/lots of pauses, twists, mood shifts
3. 09:09 – slow ballad, very deliberate phrasing, pained harmonies
4. 13:54 – solo bass, then strange percolations in 7/4 time, wide-open solos
5. 12:53 – speedy avant-bop improvisation, then slow and moody
6. 06:13 – laid-back, oddly deconstructed Charlie Parker melody, good solos
7. 08:05 – classic tune warped: lots of drama, burning solos, speedy drums
