Album Review

Another set of robust free jazz from one of the biggest contemporary names (a limited edition 2-CD version of this album sold out almost immediately). Compositions steeped in the jazz tradition, spiced with articulate soloing and the occasional free-improv break. Ken Vandermark sticks to only baritone sax and clarinets, leaving other sax duties to Dave Rempis. Fred Lonberg-Holm, on cello, is still around, sometimes adding electrified sounds to replace the guitar Vandermark used to incorporate in the band. Top-notch stuff.

- Like a mystery thriller: Dramatic, fairly fast, w/an exciting bass clarinet solo and a car-crash ending.
- Rock/funk beat, in moderation, slow horn lines. Great snappy sax solo. Gets into some abstract improvising later.
- Slow but bold, stern, with a swaying horn theme. Sax and cello solos get cooking.
- Low-key rustle, a careful slow start. Then a fast squeaky clarinet solo, sparse.
- Brisk and upbeat, a bit gruff. Catchy swing. Crazed, brutal electric cello solo.
- Slow, atmospheric, prominent cello. STOPS after 4 minutes, for a sparse improv leading into a snappy midtempo theme that really gets swinging.
- Gracefully swinging, pleasant
- Fast, bopping, even rocking. Great uptempo stuff, after a slow start.
