MICHAEL BLAKE SEXTET: Amor de Cosmos
Songlines, 2007

POSTMODERN JAZZ – Inspired both by an eccentric figure from Canadian history and by saxophonist Blake’s own life, this intriguing set combines quirky, almost humorous pointillism with strange, murky scenes. The band is tight, deftly balancing the strange and the familiar.

All tracks good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 8

1. 4:43 – sparse, atmospheric improv: becomes a ballad, then inquisitive
2. 7:16 – perky, oddball tune: rolls along with strong solos & plinky breaks
3. 9:53 – slowly rising theme, alternately quiet & brash; good electric piano
4. 10:56 – pensive, warm theme, then tick-tock tune speeds up; nifty solos, great prepared piano/marimba dialogue, ends in silence
5. 7:22 – gentle, friendly-sounding tune with an African underpinning
6. 5:01 – unsettled, angular ballad; like refracted light, gradually builds
7. 5:44 – improv: slow, dark, atmospheric, spooky sounds, builds up
8. 6:22 – strange, serpentine ditty fractures, wanders free, hits a groove
