Modern jazz with energetic big band lines, aggressive free-jazz solos, and some out-there improv. The big band parts are smoothly composed, heeding the jazz tradition with a well knit, ear-catching sound. Yes, the opening track starts kind of "out there," but mainstream jazzers will find more than enough to love here. Top-notch. Instrumental, FCC clean.
Josh Berman - cornet
Jaimie Branch - trumpet, flugelhorn
Jeb Bishop - trombone
Nick Broste - trombone
Marc Unternahrer - tuba
James Falzone - clarinet
Guillermo Gregorio - sax, clarinet
Dave Rempis - sax
Jason Stein - bass clarinet
Keefe Jackson - sax, bass clarinet
Anton Hatwich - bass
Frank Rosaly - drums
1- (11:23) Mid/fast, with great sparkling solos. Growly horn improv intro followed by some sharp big-band writing.
2- (8:52) Punchy midtempo big-band lines. A quiet improv middle carries over into a low-key riff.
3- (10:02) Slow. Turns into a spiky free-for-all about halfway through; last 3 mins. are a tasteful drum solo that builds gradually
4- (8:49) Playfully tense pulse, some swingin' composing. Solos include a perky unaccompanied clarinet in happy tones.
5- (7:51) Quiet moaning improv. Then a screaming fast sax/drums duet, quite free-jazzy and intense.
6- (8:46) Carefully considered, with some bright horn lines in the intro and a calm flow throughout. Snappy ending. Nice.
